The Free Anchorage Alaska Travel Guide with Information for Anchorage AK Visitors and Friends. 2025 Anchorage Travel Guide.

The work continues with the all new Anchorage Travel Guides. We are currently adding a travel related business directory to help you in your trip planning.Anchorage is known as “The Gateway to Alaska,” primarily for the reason that Anchorage AK is not only the state's largest city but is also where the vast majority of visitors to Anchorage first arrive when traveling by air — no matter what your final destination may be. Aside from those arriving at the Anchorage International Airport the city is also a major port city for Interior Alaska with a population of over 300,000.

A Little Tidbit Here: Alaska is the only state in which a borough is the equivalent of a county, as found in other states. Alaska is divided into 19 organized boroughs and one “Unorganized Borough”.

Visiting Anchorage, Alaska

The work continues with the all new Anchorage Travel Guides and we are busy adding to the travel related Anchorage business directory as a new service tothe local businesses as well as to our readers. This directory acts as an assistant in helping visitors to discover many of the lesser-known alternatives in vacationing here in our home city of Anchorage AK.

A Little Background; Looking for a change, I initially moved to Anchorage from the State of Washington shortly after getting out of the military; it was way back in the winter of 1981. Well, after an ardious attempt at finding a landing spot back home I took up on a friends offer and drove up to Alaska with him, in February of all times. We were in a 1953 Willys Wagon, the heater was, for better or worse, (expletive removed) marginal..., and that is being on the generous side too. I remember going through Dease Lake on the Cassiar Highway, there were actual stalactites of ice hanging from the ceiling as we pulled into the gas station; it was 20° below zero on the thermometer hanging on the fuel pump. Little did I know that it was going to get a whole lot colder in the days ahead!

From the point that I'm writing this, one may safely assume, we did make it to the promised land. And we did just that too. We found that sanctuary that we saught and a place where we could call home. Anchorage was that place and for the most part it still is to this day. Will we ever leave? Only time will tel as I can’t write the conclusion to this story just yet. One thing I can say for certain, these cold winter nights do make places “South of the Border” look pretty good—especially in the month of February.   P.S. Our reference to “South of the Border” is relating to the Lower 48 states.

Hotels, Motels and Roadhouses in Anchorage

Lodging is the first thing that one needs to secure when planning their trip to Anchorage. If you are arriving at the Anchorage Airport, many of the lodgings will offer a shuttle service between the airport and your hotel. That takes care of your first transportation issue and now it is time to check into your room.

Hotels range from ballroom class hotels to grab your bags lets hit the hay before we head out to play. That is not to say that the mid-range hotels don’t offer concierge services to their guests, it just means some are more about rest then indulging their guests in lavish treatments. If you desire a spa treatment then the upper end hotels are the place to stay. For those looking to connect with the wide-open spaces, a hotel or roadhouse might be more to your needs.

Lets take a look at the hotels in Anchorage Alaska and see which one is the better fit for your needs.

Hostels in Anchorage

Anchorage Hostels provide budget-oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed, usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and a kitchen. Rooms within the hostels found in Anchorage can be jointly occupied by both males and females, although some offer private rooms for either males or females guests. Be sure to ask if this is a concern that you have.

Getting Around in Anchorage

While there is no shortage of transportation options for getting around in Anchorage, one must be clear that the Municipality of Anchorage is a large and sprawling city with an abundance of great city parks and expanses of semi-wilderness all within the borders of the city.
